The New Ghana Social Justice Forum (NGSJF) has questioned the recent promise attributed to the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, Hon. Baba Jamal, to support law students in the constituency by paying 25 percent of their fees.

The President of the Forum, Yahaya Alhassan, described the promise as inadequate and called on the MP to provide clarity on the precise nature of the programme, including how many students will benefit, the exact percentage of fees to be covered, the source of funding and the duration of the support.

“WHAT TYPE OF SCHOLARSHIP PAYS ONLY 25 PERCENT?”

According to the NGSJF, describing a contribution covering only 25 percent of a student's fees as a scholarship requires greater clarification.

“What type of scholarship pays only 25 percent? If you can't spell it, don't write it,” Yahaya Alhassan said, challenging the MP to clearly define the programme and his financial commitment.

“If other Members of Parliament are providing full scholarship support to students in their constituencies, Ayawaso East should not settle for a promise that covers only 25 percent of students’ fees,” the Forum said.

HOW MANY STUDENTS WILL BENEFIT?

The NGSJF is also asking the MP to disclose the number of law students from Ayawaso East who will benefit from the programme before publicising the initiative through the media.

CALL FOR 100 PERCENT SCHOLARSHIP

The NGSJF is therefore challenging Hon. Baba Jamal to reconsider the proposal and commit to 100 percent payment of the fees of eligible law students from Ayawaso East, subject to transparent and publicly stated selection criteria.

The NGSJF says it welcomes any genuine effort to support students, but insists that scholarship commitments must be clear, transparent, measurable and meaningful enough to make a real difference to beneficiaries.

A public-interest environmental advocacy campaign has taken the proposed installation of artificial synthetic turf at the Kawukudi Park Mini-Stadium in Nima, Accra, to the High Court, seeking to halt the project until environmental and sustainability concerns are properly considered.

The action has been initiated by Yahaya Alhassan, President of the New Ghana Social Justice Forum, and Alhassan Abdallah Musah, Chief Executive Officer of the World College of Mayors.

The Plaintiffs are seeking an interlocutory injunction restraining the Defendants, their agents, contractors, servants and workmen from proceeding with the installation of artificial synthetic turf at the Kawukudi Park Mini-Stadium pending the final determination of the substantive case.

Environmental concerns

The applicants argue that the choice of artificial turf raises important questions about environmental sustainability, green urban development and the long-term welfare of the surrounding community.

According to the applicants, natural grass should be considered as a more environmentally sustainable alternative, where technically and environmentally practicable.

They argue that public recreational infrastructure should not be evaluated only on sporting considerations but should also take into account environmental protection, sustainable urban planning and potential employment opportunities.

The applicants further contend that the environmental implications of the proposed artificial turf should be properly considered before irreversible steps are taken.

Why the injunction is being sought

The plaintiffs say they are concerned that the artificial turf could be installed before the court has an opportunity to determine the substantive issues raised in the case.

They are therefore asking the High Court to preserve the status quo, arguing that proceeding with the installation could render the substantive action ineffective or substantially prejudice the public-interest concerns being raised.

The applicants maintain that the balance of convenience favours temporarily halting the installation while the court considers the matter.

Call for a greener approach

The legal action forms part of a broader call for a “Go Green” approach to public infrastructure development, particularly in densely populated urban communities.

The campaigners argue that public parks and recreational facilities should contribute to healthier and greener communities rather than simply provide sporting infrastructure.

The New Ghana Social Justice Forum (NGSJF) has raised concerns over what it describes as the apparent lack of mainstream media coverage of its petition to diplomatic missions concerning Felix Adomako Mensah, popularly known as ZionFelix, and allegations surrounding the promotion of the activities of Central Migration Grace and its Chief Executive Officer, Alifa Adams.

The Forum says the matter raises a broader and uncomfortable question about the relationship between Ghana's media industry, celebrities and commercial interests:

Does every public-interest story receive the same level of media attention, or can the influence and stature of an individual determine what gets published?

WHY THE MEDIA SILENCE?

Are commercial relationships between celebrities and media organisations affecting editorial decisions?

Could some media platforms themselves have commercial interests in promoting travel and visa businesses?

The Forum says these questions deserve public discussion not because ZionFelix or anyone else should be condemned without evidence, but because independent journalism is essential to public accountability.

WHEN CELEBRITY INFLUENCE MEETS THE VISA BUSINESS

The NGSJF says its concern extends beyond one celebrity.

The Forum argues that celebrities, influencers and bloggers can exercise considerable influence over public confidence when promoting businesses or individuals offering travel and visa services.

In the case cited in its petition, the Forum refers to social-media material in which ZionFelix is seen visiting and interviewing Alifa Adams and showcasing aspects of his residence and lifestyle.

The Forum says such promotional content may have contributed to an impression of credibility and success surrounding the businessman and his organisation.

One reported complainant, Matilda Ampomaa Nyame, has reportedly told the Forum that the social-media content and reputation of ZionFelix contributed to the confidence she placed in the organisation before making payments.

THE DOCUMENTARY EVIDENCE

The Forum says it has submitted documentary material to accompany its petition, including a video relating to ZionFelix and Central Migration Grace, as well as other online publications and materials concerning Alifa Adams.

THE LESSON OF NAM1 AND MENZGOLD

The Forum says the controversy also raises an important lesson from Ghana's Menzgold/NAM1 experience.

Menzgold received extensive celebrity endorsements and promotional exposure before its collapse.

The NGSJF argues that the Menzgold experience should have produced a stronger culture of due diligence before celebrities lend their names and platforms to businesses dealing with the public's money.

The Forum's question is therefore straightforward:

If stronger scrutiny and accountability had followed celebrity endorsements associated with the Menzgold/NAM1 saga, would it have discouraged other celebrities from promoting businesses that later become the subject of serious fraud allegations?

WHAT SHOULD DIPLOMATIC MISSIONS DO?

The Forum believes that sanctioning major offenders and publicly warning the public about verified fraudulent operators can help prevent further victims before fraud occurs, rather than waiting until large numbers of people have lost their money.

The Forum stresses that, given concerns about the effectiveness and timeliness of local law-enforcement and judicial processes, diplomatic missions should not rely solely on Ghanaian law-enforcement agencies or the courts. Instead, they should use every lawful preventive measure within their mandates to protect visa applicants, sanction proven offenders where legally permitted, and safeguard the integrity of their visa systems.

FROM MEDIA SILENCE TO ALTERNATIVE GHANA NEWS

The NGSJF says the experience has also become a lesson for the organisation itself.

According to President Yahaya Alhassan, if legitimate public-interest concerns can struggle to receive independent media attention because of the influence or connections of persons involved, civil society must develop alternative ways of communicating with the public.

The Forum therefore intends to strengthen its advocacy for alternative and independent Ghanaian news platforms capable of publishing public-interest stories while maintaining journalistic standards of fairness, verification and accountability.

The objective, it says, is not to attack established media houses or replace professional journalism.

Rather, the Forum wants to create additional platforms through which citizens, and civil-society organisations can raise legitimate concerns and allow the public to examine the evidence for itself.

A MESSAGE TO DIPLOMATIC MISSIONS AND INTERNATIONAL ORGANISATIONS

The NGSJF says its decision to share the story with diplomatic missions and international organisations is intended to encourage a broader conversation about visa fraud prevention, media independence and celebrity accountability.

The Forum says the petition forms part of its broader campaign to protect Ghanaians from visa fraud and encourage prospective travellers to use official diplomatic missions and authorised visa-application channels rather than relying on unverified intermediaries.

According to the Forum, many Ghanaians are persuaded to engage travel and visa agencies because of endorsements and promotional content produced by celebrities, influencers, bloggers and other public figures.

Concerns Over Celebrity Influence

The Forum says it is particularly concerned about the influence public figures can have on consumers when promoting travel and visa businesses.

It cited a viral social-media video in which Felix Adomako Mensah is seen visiting and interviewing Alifa Adams and showcasing aspects of his residence and lifestyle.

The Forum argues that such content could create an impression of success, wealth and credibility around a business and potentially influence members of the public when deciding whether to entrust money to the organisation.

ACCRA, GHANA — The Founder of the Alhassan Salifu Muslim Community Centre in Kumasi, popularly known as the Kumasi City Mosque, Mr. Alhassan Salifu, has donated relief items to support victims of the devastating Accra floods.

The donation was made on 31st August 2026 at the Kanda Central Mosque for onward distribution to people affected by the floods.

The humanitarian intervention comes at a difficult time for many families following the devastating floods, which have reportedly claimed at least 12 lives, destroyed properties and left affected residents facing serious challenges, including the loss of homes and personal belongings.

Mr. Salifu said the donation was motivated by the spirit of humanity, compassion and solidarity, stressing that the beneficiaries include people from different religious backgrounds who are all entitled to support during times of crisis.

“Flood victims deserve our support regardless of their faith, background or community. At a challenging moment such as this, what matters most is our shared humanity and our willingness to stand with those who have suffered,” Mr. Salifu said.

He appealed to individuals, religious organisations, civil society groups, businesses and other institutions to extend assistance to the affected families.

Mr. Salifu said the scale of the disaster required a collective response, urging organisations and well-meaning Ghanaians to show compassion and help provide relief to those who have lost their homes, property and livelihoods.

Accra, Ghana — The Coalition of National Zongo Political Groupings has condemned the threat of death contained in a viral social media video involving an unnamed Ghanaian Islamic cleric, describing the reported remarks as inconsistent with Ghana’s tradition of religious tolerance, peace and coexistence.

The Coalition’s Policy Analyst, Alhassan Abdallah Musah, condemned the reported statement in which the cleric suggested that Muslims should kill anyone who insults Prophet Muhammad.

Mr. Musah stressed that the identity of the cleric had not been independently established and that the Coalition did not endorse or support threats of violence against persons of any faith.

According to him, such remarks are “un-Ghanaian” and have no place in a country known for its peaceful coexistence among people of different religious backgrounds.

“Ghana is a peace-loving country. We do not promote religious extremism. Our strength lies in tolerance, peaceful coexistence and unity despite our religious differences,” Mr. Musah said.

He described the reported statement as being in bad taste and urged Muslims who may have supported the alleged remarks to reflect on the teachings and example of Prophet Muhammad, whom he described as a messenger of peace who would not advocate the killing of people in his name.

Mr. Musah also condemned attacks against people because of their religious beliefs, stressing that Ghanaians belong to one nation despite practising different faiths.

“It is one Ghana, but different faiths. We are like a tree with many branches, but we remain one tree.”

He called on religious leaders, community leaders and young people to reject messages capable of provoking religious hatred, retaliation or violence.

Extremism Has No Place in Islam

Also speaking on the issue, Mr. Alhassan Salifu, Founder of the Alhassan Salifu Muslim Community Centre in Kumasi, said extremism and violence have no place in Islam.

He urged preachers in mosques and churches, as well as bloggers and social media commentators, to use their platforms to promote messages that strengthen unity, peace and community development rather than division and violence.

According to Mr. Salifu, religious leaders have a particular responsibility to ensure that their messages do not inflame tensions or encourage individuals to take the law into their own hands.

He encouraged Muslims and Christians alike to engage in respectful dialogue and to resolve disagreements through lawful and peaceful means.

The Coalition was established to promote unity among Zongo communities and to mobilise the general public against violence, intolerance and actions that threaten Ghana’s peace and social cohesion.

The Coalition reaffirmed its commitment to “one Ghana, different faiths, one people”, stressing that religious diversity should remain a source of strength rather than division.

The accused persons were charged with offences arising from an incident at the premises of the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company (BOST) at Dzorwulu on 22 November 2022.

The charges included:

Failure to Notify the Police of a Special Event, contrary to Section 1 of the Public Order Act, 1994 (Act 491), as stated in the charge sheet.

Conspiracy to Commit Crime, to wit Offensive Conduct Conducive to the Breach of the Peace, contrary to Section 23(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), as stated in the charge sheet.

Abetment of Crime, to wit Offensive Conduct Conducive to the Breach of the Peace, against the second and third accused persons.

Offensive Conduct Conducive to the Breach of the Peace, contrary to Section 207 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

PROSECUTION'S CASE

According to the prosecution's case, Yahaya Alhassan, accompanied by Ali Shaku and Osaman Salia, went to the BOST premises at Dzorwulu on 22 November 2022 and requested to see the Managing Director, Mr. Edwin Alfred Provencal.

The prosecution alleged that, after being informed that the Managing Director was not available, the accused persons began making noise at the premises. A banner associated with the New Ghana Social Justice Forum was displayed. The banner contained allegations concerning high fuel prices and alleged financial wrongdoing involving BOST's Managing Director.

The prosecution further alleged that Yahaya Alhassan distributed leaflets, while Ali Shaku shouted in Hausa and Osaman Salia filmed the incident.

The Facility Manager of BOST, Mr. Emmanuel Darko, stated that he attempted to calm the accused persons and asked them to leave the premises. He alleged that Yahaya Alhassan responded with words including allegations that persons at BOST were thieves and would be exposed.

The police were subsequently called and the three accused persons were arrested and taken to the Kotobabi Police Station.

The prosecution alleged that Yahaya Alhassan had not notified the police of his intention to undertake the demonstration.

PROSECUTION WITNESS

The prosecution identified Mr. Emmanuel Darko, Facility Manager of BOST, as a complainant and witness. His witness statement described the arrival of the three accused persons, the banner, the distribution of leaflets, the filming of the incident, the alleged verbal confrontation and the subsequent arrest by the police.

The prosecution indicated during case management that it intended to call three witnesses.

PROCEDURAL HISTORY

25 April 2024:

The matter came before His Worship Prince Osei Owusu. Yahaya Alhassan was present, the second accused was present, and the third accused was absent. The case was adjourned to 30 May 2024 for Case Management Conference (CMC).

30 May 2024:

The prosecution confirmed that witness statements had been served on the accused. The prosecution indicated that it intended to call three witnesses. The defence indicated that, if called upon to open its defence, only the first accused, Yahaya Alhassan, would testify. The matter was adjourned to 20 August 2024 for trial to commence.

20 August 2024:

The prosecution requested an adjournment to consult its legal department concerning the proper handing over of the docket. The Court adjourned the matter to 16 September 2024 and indicated that the case would be struck out if the prosecution failed to produce its witness at the next sitting.

16 September 2024:

The prosecution informed the Court that the substantive prosecutor had been transferred and had failed to hand over the docket. Counsel for the accused reminded the Court of its previous order and prayed that the charges be struck out for want of prosecution.

FINAL DISPOSITION

From my perspective, these incidents are deeply concerning and deserve urgent attention to ensure the safety and protection of health professionals who serve the public under often challenging circumstances.

Healthcare facilities are meant to be places of healing, care, and trust. Yet across Ghana, hospitals increasingly contend with workplace violence, unauthorised access, theft of medicines and equipment, and emergency threats that disrupt the very environment meant to preserve life. Health workers have come under attack from patients and their relatives, while troubling reports of missing infants and dead bodies raise urgent questions about who is truly safeguarding our health institutions. The life of every health worker and every patient in-patient, out-patient, or deceased matters, and protecting that life requires more than goodwill. It requires a deliberate, professional security architecture.

Hospital security in Ghana remains one of the most underrated and under-resourced functions in the health sector. Too often, the role is reduced to directing vehicles into parking spaces in exchange for a token of appreciation, rather than performing the protective duties a modern hospital demands: managing entrances, de-escalating aggressive behaviour, safeguarding medical equipment and medicines, and responding swiftly to emergencies. Security personnel are typically among the lowest-paid members of the healthcare team, despite evidence that they are more likely than clinical staff to be injured on duty with many incidents occurring at night, when facilities are most vulnerable.

Verbal and physical aggression against staff, theft of medicines and equipment, trespassing, and threats to doctors and nurses are now regular occurrences. Under these pressures, and without adequate support, some guards are themselves at risk of burnout, substance misuse, and behavioural difficulties, even though they remain very much part of the broader healthcare workforce. If the state can station police at banks, courts, and alongside political officials, it is reasonable to ask why hospitals where the most vulnerable citizens lie do not receive comparable priority.

One practical way to close this gap is to merge hospital security with the National Ambulance Service into a single, formidable unit a Hospital Security and Emergency Services (HSES). Both functions exist to respond rapidly to crises in and around health facilities: one to threats of violence, theft, or unauthorised access, and the other to medical emergencies. In practice, these crises frequently overlap.

A violent altercation may produce injuries requiring immediate medical attention, and an ambulance crew responding to an emergency may need security support to manage a hostile scene. By bringing both functions under one command, personnel could receive rigorous, integrated training in both security protocols and emergency preparedness, ensuring that every officer on duty is equipped to handle whichever crisis arises first, at the barest minimum.

Such an amalgamation is not without precedent. Ghana has previously merged specialised state services to improve efficiency and coordination most notably the merger of the Internal Revenue Service and the Customs, Excise and Preventive Service to form the Ghana Revenue Authority. That experience shows that distinct institutional cultures can be successfully unified under a single administrative framework when the rationale is sound and the transition is well managed. A similar approach to hospital security and ambulance services would consolidate scarce resources, harmonise training standards, and create a clearer career structure for personnel who currently operate in relative isolation.

A merged Hospital Security and Emergency Services unit would offer several advantages. It would enable a faster, more coordinated response to incidents that combine security and medical dimensions. It would professionalise hospital security, improving training, pay, and morale, and reducing the behavioural and mental health pressures currently affecting poorly supported guards. It would establish consistent protocols across facilities nationwide, rather than the patchwork arrangements that exist today. And it would send a clear signal that the safety of patients, staff, and visitors and the dignity of the deceased is treated with the same seriousness as the security afforded to banks, courts, and state officials.

Hospitals should be sanctuaries, not sites of fear. Merging the National Ambulance Service with hospital security offers a practical, holistic pathway towards that goal one that draws on Ghana’s own experience of successful institutional mergers and responds directly to the realities health workers and patients face every day. Policymakers, health administrators, and security agencies should give this proposal serious consideration as part of a broader commitment to health safety and security for all.

Court rules Akosua Serwaa not sole surviving spouse of Daddy Lumba

A Kumasi High Court, presided over by Justice Dorinda Smith‑Arthur, has ruled that Akosua Serwaa Fosuh cannot be declared the sole surviving spouse of the late highlife legend Daddy Lumba, as the evidence presented did not prove her claim beyond a reasonable doubt.

The case arose from a dispute over which widow was lawfully entitled to perform widowhood rites following Daddy Lumba’s death.

During proceedings on Friday, November 28, evidence showed that Priscilla Ofori, popularly known as Odo Broni, was customarily married to Daddy Lumba before his passing. The court also acknowledged that Akosua Serwaa was customarily married to him but rejected a purported German marriage certificate presented as proof of a civil marriage, noting that the document was an extract, not an original certificate.

Justice Smith‑Arthur ruled that both Akosua Serwaa and Odo Broni should be recognised as surviving wives of Daddy Lumba and must be acknowledged by the Abusuapanyin in the performance of the widowhood rites. The judge stressed that there should be no hindrance to the removal and burial of the late musician.

Dr. Mrs. Beatrice Wiafe Addai, Chief Executive Officer and Consultant Breast Surgeon at the Peace and Love Hospital, has issued a clarion call for a national reset in Ghana’s approach to cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

According to her, the transformation of cancer care in the country “has been long overdue,” given the rising burden of the disease and the increasing number of families affected nationwide.

Speaking on Day Two of the 2025 National Cancer Forum in Accra, Dr. Wiafe Addai challenged policymakers and health sector actors to confront long-held misconceptions that have slowed progress in cancer control.

She noted that for many years, cancer was wrongly perceived as “that woman’s problem” or “that patient’s problem,” leading to limited public attention and delayed investments in national cancer systems.

“Today, cancer has come so close to all of us—our homes, our workplaces, our communities,” she said. “Its impact has made the work of advocates easier, but also far more urgent.”

Dr. Wiafe Addai, who also serves as President and Founder of Breast Care International and is recognised globally for her advocacy work, urged Ghana to draw lessons from international civil society organizations that have shaped global cancer policy and community engagement.

She cited the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) and the NCD Alliance as key examples of civil society-led institutions that have successfully influenced policies, expanded access to care, and strengthened survivor support systems in various regions.

Dr. Wiafe Addai described civil society organizations (CSOs) as indispensable partners in the cancer care ecosystem.

“Civil society is not detached from the people,” she said.

“They are in the hospitals, in the communities, in the homes of patients. They are often the bridge between the health system and the citizen.”

She highlighted their role in public education, community mobilization, early detection campaigns, and patient navigation services that help individuals move from diagnosis to treatment without being lost in the system.

Addressing the cultural and religious barriers that continue to impede early detection, Dr. Wiafe Addai argued that bold and persistent advocacy remains necessary.

She revealed that many cancer patients, especially those with breast cancer, still hide in prayer camps and only seek care after extensive public awareness campaigns—particularly after the October Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“You cannot change deeply rooted perceptions by whispering,” she said.

“People are still arriving at the hospital when it is far too late. So if noise-making will save lives, why shouldn’t we shout? Why shouldn’t we educate boldly?”

Dr. Wiafe Addai welcomed the presence of health professionals, policymakers, development partners, and CSOs at the forum, saying their collective engagement was critical for long-term progress.

She stressed that cancer control must be understood as a shared responsibility.

“Cancer is a joint venture—not one person’s responsibility,” she remarked. “If a community does not have a treatment centre, civil society and local leaders can still help build the bridge that connects patients to care. No one should suffer alone.”

She noted that the absence of strong social support systems places significant strain on patients, caregivers, and families. Many, she said, struggle financially and emotionally throughout the treatment journey.

As part of efforts to reduce the financial burden on patients, Dr. Wiafe Addai called for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy to be enrolled in the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme.

She argued that those who travel long distances for treatment deserve temporary financial support until they complete therapy.

“Once they finish treatment, they can exit the programme and new patients can be enrolled,” she suggested. “This is something we can do ourselves without reliance on donor funding.”

Dr. Wiafe Addai made a strong appeal for a comprehensive national roadmap that guarantees sustainable prevention, effective early detection, and equitable treatment for all Ghanaians—regardless of where they live.

“A woman in a village should receive the same quality of care as a woman in Accra,” she said. “Geography should not determine survival.”

She urged stakeholders to view civil society not as an obstacle but as a catalyst capable of amplifying and accelerating existing national efforts.

With strong collaboration, she said, Ghana can build a more resilient and equitable cancer care system.
